Statement on the German Government’s Reduction of the Air Travel Ticket Tax
On 13 November, the German government decided to reduce the air travel ticket tax as of 1 July 2026. A decision strongly criticized by Plant-for-the-Planet.
“The decision by the German government to lower the air travel ticket tax sends a disastrous signal during COP 30 in Brazil,” says Felix Finkbeiner, founder of Plant-for-the-Planet. “Instead of protecting the climate, the government is promoting climate-damaging means of transport. To make such a decision now, while the whole world is looking to COP 30, is simply disappointing,” he added.
“Germany’s leadership in global climate action is needed now more urgently than ever. Yet the government has still not announced any investment in the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF). Together with twelve other organizations, Plant-for-the-Planet has sent an open letter to Chancellor Friedrich Merz, urging him to commit 2.5 billion US dollars. Instead of taking meaningful climate action, however, the German government has chosen to spend 350 million euros on climate-damaging mobility at home. This approach is unacceptable,” Finkbeiner said.
