In an inspiring initiative to combat climate change and promote environmental responsibility, three Plant-for-the-Planet Academies took place in Pakistan from November 6th-8th, 2024. The event brought together 240 enthusiastic students, local leaders, and teachers who planted nearly 300 trees, making a strong statement about the power of youth in shaping a sustainable future.
A Warm Welcome and an Energetic Start
The day kicked off early, with students arriving at 8:00 AM for check-in and registration. They were greeted with warm hospitality, and each participant received a T-shirt as part of the welcome reception. The academy commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran, setting a reflective and purposeful tone for the day.
Mr. Wasif, the Program Coordinator, along with the head teacher of the school, extended heartfelt welcome remarks to the attendees. To build camaraderie among participants, an engaging self-introduction session was conducted, followed by an interactive warm-up game that added an element of fun and energy.
Understanding Climate Challenges
The core objective of the Academy was to educate and inspire young minds about climate justice and environmental responsibility. Mr. Wasif led an introductory session emphasizing the vital role of the younger generation in climate action, reinforcing the theme: Now We Children Save the World.
A powerful multimedia presentation featuring Climate Justice Ambassador videos and slides deepened the participants’ understanding of climate change. The session also included an interactive Q&A, allowing young climate and water fellows to voice their concerns and discuss real-world environmental challenges.
Energizing Breaks and Interactive Learning
To keep participants energized, a tea break with refreshments was provided. The academy then delved into a critical discussion on climate challenges, where Mr. Wasif highlighted climate impacts, vulnerabilities, and the necessity of intergenerational cooperation to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 5, 6, and 13.
An engaging World Café activity followed, dividing participants into groups to brainstorm climate challenges and solutions. The young minds explored ways to engage parents, teachers, media, adults, and peers in environmental action. Through the World Game, children visualized the global disparity in resource distribution and sought fairer solutions by redistributing tokens, chocolates, and balloons, symbolizing wealth, population, and carbon emissions.
Action-Oriented Sessions
After a well-deserved lunch break and Juma prayer, participants engaged in the highlight of the academy: the Tree Planting Activity. Guided by teachers and co-moderators, students planted 100 trees, reinforcing the message: Stop Talking, Start Planting! They also learned essential tree care techniques to ensure sustainability.
To further equip students as climate ambassadors, a Rhetoric Training session was conducted. Participants practiced public speaking and presentation skills, preparing to advocate for environmental issues in their communities.
Establishing Local Climate Justice Clubs
A significant outcome of the academy was the formation of local Climate Justice Clubs, empowering students to lead ongoing environmental initiatives within their school and community.
Conclusion and Recognition
The event concluded with a motivational speech by Mrs. Hina, the school principal and climate change leader. She emphasized the urgency of climate action, reminding students of their role as future stewards of the planet. A vote of thanks was given by Mrs. Iqra Awan and Mr. Khushal, who expressed gratitude to all facilitators and organizers.
To honor the participants’ commitment, Tree by Tree books and Climate Justice Ambassador certificates were distributed. The event wrapped up with vibrant group photos, capturing the enthusiasm and commitment of these young climate warriors.
