We also want to honour the great Wangari Maathai and plant trees in memory of her worldwide. So join us, so that we become as many as possible! Send us photographs of your planting activity on 3rd March! Whether you plant alone in your garden, with your fellow students or the whole village community: Every tree counts. Wangari Maathai is a great role model for Plant-for-the-Planet and which day would be more adequate than an environmental day memorizing her to show how much we can reach all together?
Africa Environment Day (AED) was designated by Decision of African Union (AU) Executive Council in 2002, which falls on 3 March each year. AED seeks to raise public awareness on environmental challenges in Africa such as climate change, desertification, deforestation, land degradation, endangered biodiversity etc. which are mainly responsible for problems related to food security, health and development.
At the AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in February 2012, it was agreed that the organization should recognize the great contribution to environmental awareness in Africa made by the late Wangari Maathai. One of the ways the African Union has chosen to recognize Prof. Maathai is through renaming AED to Wangari Maathai Day (WMD).
The theme for 2014 AED/WMD as articulated by the AU is: Combating Desertification in Africa: Enhancing Agricultural Productivity and Food Security, with regional celebrations planned in Lesotho.
The aims of the Wangari Maathai Day 2014 event is to inspire Kenyan youth to heal the earth through intergenerational collaboration, transformative leadership, promotion of green jobs, technology, traditional practices and experimental learning.
