Plant-for-the-Planet
On March 10th we celebrated the set up of a new academy in La Aldea de S. Nicolas (Gran Canaria), led and taught by three ambassadors of the Municipality, who were empowered by Felix last year.
A total of 84 children took active part that day. They learned about climate change and climate justice, made plans for future action, covered the mouths of the Municipality’s Mayor and the Minister for the Environment, planted more than 50 trees, organised a local – indigenous dance “baile de la ramita”, ate paella with parents and participants, and finally, announced the programme to the adults and received the certificates of Climate Justice Ambassadors.
The dance “baile de la ramita”, is a symbolic dance, performed by the aborigenes to beg their God Alcorac for rain/water. The dance lasts several hours and uses the branches of the trees as a symbol; it starts up in the mountains and finishes in the ocean by tapping the water with the branches so it would go up into the sky and thus produce rain. It is a beautiful ritual to ask for water and to reclaim the forests on the planet.
The children enjoyed the academy a lot and are already prepairing new collective actions to go planting once a month.
El dia 10 de Marzo se celebr o en La Aldea de S. Nicol as (Gran Canaria) una academia impartida por tres embajadores del Municipio, formados por Felix hizo el año pasado en la isla. Un total de 84 niños/as participaron en la jornada, aprendieron sobre el Cambio Clim{atico y la Justicia Climatica, planearon sus acciones futuras, taparon la boca al alcalde del Municipio y a la Consejera de Medio Ambiente, plantaron mas de 50 arboles, hicieron un pequeño “baile de la ramita”, comieron una sabrosa paella junto a sus padres y otras personas participantes, , expusieron su programa a los adultos y recibieron el certificado como “Embajadores por la Justicia Climatica”.
El “Baile de la Rama” es una tradici on que tiene el origen en los rituales abor igenes para pedir la lluvia a su dios Alcorac. Consiste en un baile que dura muchas horas, utiliza las ramas de los arboles como s imbolo, comienza en las montañas y acaba en el mar, golpeando el agua, para que suba al cielo y se produzca la lluvia. Es un bonito ritual, muy apropiado para pedir la la lluvia y para reivindicar el bosque en el Planeta.
Los niños/as disfrutaron mucho de la academia y ya est an preparando nuevas acciones para plantar una vez al mes.
