Campeche elected its new governor, Layda Sansores, with a six-year term this September. With the change of government, there has also been a new appointment to the Ministry of the Environment (SEMABICCE), now headed by Dr Sandra Laffon Leal.
On November 24th, representatives of Plant-for-the-Planet Mexico met with Dr Laffon and two of her department heads and signed the here linked agreement. It sets out that Plant-for-the-Planet will collaborate long term to protect the Balam-ku and Balam-kin reserves, restore degraded areas within the reserve, and plant further trees in the rest of the state with farmers. The two sides will also collaborate in building a specialized nursery and on a seed collection program.
Felix Finkbeiner, Chair of the Board, Plant-for-the-Planet Foundation: “This was an important step for Plant-for-the-Planet in selecting sites for future restoration and growing from an organisation that does exclusively restoration to a more holistic approach of restoration plus conservation.”
