10th Youth Summit 2024: A Milestone for Climate Justice Ambassadors

From October 30 to November 3, Berlin played host to an extraordinary gathering of young climate activists from across the globe. Plant-for-the-Planet’s 10th international Youth Summit brought together 60 Climate Justice Ambassadors from 25 countries, representing six continents, in a vibrant celebration of climate action, collaboration, and learning. This year’s theme, “Climate Justice: Building Resilience through Networks,” underscored the importance of global unity and cooperation in the fight against climate crisis.

A Celebration of Achievements and Collaboration

The summit began on a high note, with participants celebrating Plant-for-the-Planet’s win of the 2024 UN SDG Award alongside founder Felix Finkbeiner. Fleur Newman, UNFCCC’s head of Empowerment, Gender, and Climate, addressed the group, emphasizing the need for political will and equitable wealth distribution to prioritize functioning ecosystems. “The science is clear; what we lack is the political resolve,” she reminded the delegates, urging them to continue pushing for systemic change.

The event featured a keynote by Prof. Karen Holl, a leading restoration ecologist, and a lively panel discussion on international forest conservation and restoration. Experts including Artur Monteiro, Irene Ojouk, and Anna Gee enriched the dialogue with their diverse perspectives, sparking thoughtful questions from the young ambassadors.

For many attendees, the summit was a life-changing experience. Akshit Kumar, a first-time participant, shared his journey:

“Meeting the incredible team behind Plant-for-the-Planet in person brought a sense of belonging and made the years of virtual connection feel so much more real. Their passion and dedication to climate action were evident, and their guidance throughout the event was inspiring.”

Akshit highlighted how the knowledge gained at the summit has motivated him to take action in his hometown, focusing on restoration projects, organic farming, and waste management. He particularly appreciated the hands-on restoration workshop, which emphasized soil health and ecosystem restoration. “The storytelling workshop encouraged us to articulate our environmental journeys, helping us connect emotionally with our audience and build confidence in our communication skills,” he added.

Favour Badu, Chairperson of the Global Board, reflected on the inclusive nature of this year’s summit: “I looked across the room and saw more people who shared my background, people doing inspiring work. It brought joy to my heart.” She celebrated hosting the inaugural Ambassador Awards ceremony, recognizing the contributions of Climate Justice Ambassadors worldwide, and emphasized the significance of representation in climate action. “Plant-for-the-Planet’s commitment to inclusion and diversity was clear, and it inspired me to continue empowering youth in my community,” she said.

Workshops, Stories, and Building Resilience

The summit’s program was packed with enriching activities. Participants engaged in workshops, keynote lectures, and networking opportunities that fostered collaboration and skill-building. Akshit described the sessions as “eye-opening,” particularly the talks by knowledgeable speakers who shared innovative solutions to global environmental challenges.

A key highlight was the screening of the documentary “Yumi – The Whole World,” which follows the Pacific Islands Students’ campaign to seek an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on climate change and human rights. Favour noted how this story left participants inspired and equipped with storytelling techniques to amplify their advocacy efforts.

Interactive engagement sessions allowed participants to brainstorm solutions to pressing environmental issues, collaborate in small teams, and turn ideas into actionable strategies. These activities fostered critical thinking and teamwork, laying the groundwork for future initiatives.

A Global Commitment to Climate Justice

The Youth Summit’s enduring legacy is its ability to empower young people to take meaningful action in their communities. Akshit summed up his experience: “The event was not just a learning experience but also an opportunity for profound personal growth. I left with a renewed sense of purpose and a wealth of knowledge to share.”

After the Youth Summit 2024, the participants carried forward the collective energy, insights, and friendships formed at this gathering. Favour expressed her gratitude: “I left with enough fuel to drive action in my community, knowing that our efforts are supported by dedicated individuals advocating for this cause at the international level.” To learn more about becoming a Climate Justice Ambassador and joining future summits, visit our website.
