Motivating Climate Action Through Gamification – Ambassador Paul Introduces His App ClimateQuest

From the series on inspiring Climate Justice Ambassadors worldwide

Paul already knows exactly what he wants to do with his life: “My goal in life is to do as much as possible to fight the climate crisis.” He says this with complete confidence – despite being only 15 years old. But instead of simply talking about climate action, Paul has taken matters into his own hands. With his self-developed app ClimateQuest, he wants to inspire people to adopt sustainable habits in their daily lives – through play, community, and tangible benefits for the climate.

From Academy Participant to App Developer

Paul’s journey with Plant-for-the-Planet began in a familiar way: As a child, he attended a Plant-for-the-Planet Academy, where he learned about the climate crisis and why it affects all of us. At an early age, he also discovered his passion for programming. In computer science class, he first learned how to build websites. At home, he continued teaching himself, experimenting with new programming languages and steadily expanding his skills.

“At first, I didn’t think it would work, but I just gave it a try – and it did,” Paul recalls. Today, programming is his biggest hobby. His enthusiasm even goes so far that he asked for his own server for Christmas.

Turning Frustration into an Idea

Paul feels that politicians and society are still not giving the climate crisis the attention it deserves. “It makes me angry,” he says. “The climate crisis is an existential threat to us and to future generations.” What he finds especially unfair is that the world’s poorest countries are suffering the most severe consequences, even though they have contributed the least to causing the crisis.

Organizations like Plant-for-the-Planet and the many people working together for climate justice give him hope. At the same time, Paul knows that many people want to take action but simply don’t know where to begin. That is exactly why he created ClimateQuest: to make it easier for people to get started and empower them to take action themselves.

Making Climate Action a Game

To develop the app, Paul analyzed a wide range of games and apps to understand which features keep people motivated over the long term. His goal was to appeal to as many different types of players as possible. ClimateQuest makes sustainable actions visible and rewards them through a gamified points system.

For example, users earn Climate Points by riding a bike instead of driving a car or by completing other climate-friendly actions. Every action helps them level up, making their personal progress visible. Users can also set individual weekly goals. Achieving these goals week after week builds a streak, providing an extra incentive to maintain sustainable habits over time.

Achieving More Together: Collecting Points and Planting Real Trees

Climate action is most effective when people work together, which is why community plays a central role in ClimateQuest. Users can join Families or Communities, where they can connect with others, communicate, and compare their Climate Points. The app also offers numerous ways to get involved, including publishing articles, organizing events, asking questions in the forum, and starting or supporting petitions. Regular quests provide fresh motivation, while particularly active members are recognized in the Hall of Fame.

One especially exciting feature is that the Climate Points collected are not just virtual. Once users have earned 500 Climate Points, they receive one credit. This credit can be redeemed to plant a tree through Plant-for-the-Planet, turning digital engagement into a real and measurable contribution to climate action.

In just a few months, the ClimateQuest community has already helped plant 40 trees, and more than 100 people are now using the app. For Paul, the effort has been well worth it. Over the course of several months, he invested several hours every day into developing the platform. Since October, the website has been live, and ClimateQuest is now also available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

Paul’s Message: Just Get Started

For young people who want to make a difference themselves, Paul has one simple piece of advice: “Just get started.”

“The best way is to begin with yourself and then inspire the people around you. Getting started is the hardest part – the rest comes naturally.”

He also has a message for older generations: “People should simply give things a try. Even if something goes wrong, it usually won’t be anything dramatic. Spending too much time weighing every option and discussing everything often doesn’t get you anywhere. When you’re younger, you’re simply more willing to take that first step.”

Changing the World with Your Talents

Paul’s story shows how a personal passion can grow into a meaningful contribution to climate action. His goal is clear: “I don’t want to have harmed the planet.”

Looking ahead, he wants to continue developing sustainable technologies – both software and hardware – including innovative solutions for saving energy and water. His story is an inspiring reminder that everyone can make a difference by using their own talents. All it takes is the courage to take the first step.
